My research interests focus on the History of English and English Historical Linguistics. In particular, those fields concerning (Early/Late) Modern English lexicology and lexicography, as well as the origin and the development of English for Specific Purposes-ESP (especially medical terminology and medical writing) are key factors. Linguistic, stylistic and rhetorical analyses are also related with and discussed alongside their impact at a social and cultural levels.
At present, my interests focus on 18th-century medical discourse: the development of new text types and new genres for communicative purposes (medical research article, encyclopaedic entry, dictionary entry, observations, accounts, records, case studies, treatises, handbook, lectures, etc.) is of primary relevance both within the ‘disciplinary community’ of experts (at various levels), and within English society as a whole. The role of medical writing/knowledge in supporting and fostering national identity (education, professionalization, gentility, civil society, etc.) and national ethos (healthcare, hospitals, prevention, etc.) is also of interest.
As regards Anglo-Italian relations, my research focuses on the reception of Galileo Galilei, his thought and his works in English (particularly of his Mathematical Discourses – Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche […], 1638) during the (Early) Modern English period.
